An interview with Akira Kurosawa and Garcia Marques, Nobel Prize Winner and author of Cien Anos de Soledad (Hundred Years of Solitude), was held in October 1990, just as Kurosawa was starting to film August Rhapsody. They lead a heated discussion where Kurosawa clearly exposed his outrage, notably on nuclear arm issues.
August Rhapsody. Kurosawa's work of art directed when he was 81 years old. What did he try to say in this work? War, family, changes of times, issues that remain from our parents' generation all the way through our grandchildren's generation. What were Kurosawa's beliefs in the latter years of his life? What caused his immense grief?
August Rhapsody still presents an array of challenging themes for us to think about today. This exhibition takes August Rhapsody as its main theme and displays Kurosawa's memos, production diaries, photographs, and other items related only to this film. These materials of considerable value would have never been disclosed to the public. Through Kurosawa's memoirs, not only would one be able to understand the process of making a Kurosawa film, this would be a great opportunity to have a taste of film director Akira Kurosawa's vast surge of imagination.
